Holy Strength

A little Church dedicated to "Holy Strength"
standing under a tall building
(former Ministry of Education).

Not so nice but very strange scene!

History: it was build on 16th century and
is said to protect pregnant women.
Because of the archaeological value
they had to build the building
over the church.

Saturday morning coffee
in Cerameikos square.

21.9.09

autumn rain

As seen from Petroupoli,
On the right an old furnace,
not used any more but nice to see.
On the left Petroupoleos str,
straight, long, green on both sides.

Acropolis...

... as seen from the entrance of Panathenaic Stadium.

12.9.09

umbrellas

It was raining heavily today.
Here you can see a lot of umbrella-sellers
at the exit of Synagma metro station.

These are very cheap umbrellas,
of the worst quality
(they get destroyed on the spot while wind blows)
but they have very live and happy colors!

10.9.09

bird watching!

This is not an artistic photo, but
I wanted to take a shot of the pigeons
sitting on the kiosk's roof.
This morning,
just outside the entrance of metro station,
a few minutes before getting in my work.

8.9.09

old, still beautiful

A beautiful old house,
falling apart...

6.9.09

οπωρο-παντο-πωλείον!

Οπωροπαντοπωλείον
means fruit and grocery seller, and
το παραδοσιακόν
means "the traditional".
Such little shops do still exist in neighbourhoods.
This place is called Mets and
is in a walking-distance from Syntagma...

5.9.09

Come, nice plants!

A "moving" plant-seller!
He drives through neighbourhoods and
calls women by a loudspeaker
to come and buy plants
for their gardens and balconies!

In the Monetary Museum garden.

31.8.09

under pine trees

There is a coffee shop named "terra petra" in Petroupoli,
peaceful and cool in summer mornings,
where you can have a nice view of the city
from above.

30.8.09

by the sea

Elefsina is a city just 20 minutes from Athens.

The sea is not clear enough to swim,
but perfect for an early Sunday morning coffee
besides the waves!

27.8.09

green

A coffee shop named Prasino=Green (!)
in Peristeri.

26.8.09

through flowers

Walking through this pavement every morning,
the way from the parking to the metro station,
is one of the best moments of my day.

24.8.09

Ypsountos street

Here is where I park my car every morning
in order to get in the metro.

It is not so peaceful and parking-available
in the winter, but still,
I like walking through, it is a nice street
that always makes my day!

23.8.09

a windy day

Saturday 9:00 a.m.

The smoke of the fire in East Attica
covered the sun.

UPDATE:
maybe I did not explain well enough...
That orange sky may be very beautiful,
like a Terner's painting
-that is what I also thought at first,
but
it is because of the big fire in East Attica
which keeps on for 3rd day today,
burning the suburbs and
taking people out of their homes.

14.8.09

summer in the city

The city is almost empty in August
everybody is on vacation, near the sea.

9.8.09

Monetary Museum Garden

The Monetary Museum is in Panepistimiou str a few metres form Syntagma metro station.
A beautiful old building designed by architect Ernst Ziller, that used to be Heinrich Schliemann'shome, named Iliou Melathron (=palace of Ilion).

This is the view while entering the garden

and this is the way Panepistimiou str
is (not!) seen from the garden.
There is a cute, quiet coffee shop in the garden behind the building, where you can have some time of peace and rest, away from the noise and the sun!

8.8.09

a bookshop

This is the ground floor of the Eleftheroudakis bookshop,
near the Syntagma metro station,
in the heart of the city.

Eight floors of books (!) and
a quiet coffee corner on the sixth floor.
Heaven!
Athens, the capital of Greece, with more than 3.000.000 people....
It's not just ancient ruins and pollution.
Its' also the suburbs, everyday people, gardens, bitter orange trees.
