οπωρο-παντο-πωλείον!

Οπωροπαντοπωλείον
means fruit and grocery seller, and
το παραδοσιακόν
means "the traditional".
Such little shops do still exist in neighbourhoods.
This place is called Mets and
is in a walking-distance from Syntagma...

Come, nice plants!

A "moving" plant-seller!
He drives through neighbourhoods and
calls women by a loudspeaker
to come and buy plants
for their gardens and balconies!

mousmoulia

How do you call this tree?
(Loquat?)
We call it mousmoulia.

2.5.09

flower wreath

It is a tradition in Greece to make a wreath of flowers on May day.
We say "I caught May".
Then, hang it out of the house door or on the balcony.

The dried wreath will be thrown in one of the fires
that people light in the streets,
in June, on St John's day.

April fun

Ouzo, beer and a spring bouquet!

odours!

ΤΗΑΤ is what everybody does (and eats) on Holy Sunday morning, in Greece.
Ιn the back yard, on the pavement, anywhere out of the house.
Families, neighbors, friends, all together.
Eat, drink, and listen to (loud) music.

18.4.09

green salads and beetroots

Every Saturday: street market in Ilion.

(Even on Holy Saturday:
Today, people buy bunches of green onions,
lettuces and lots of dill, to cook with lamb's haslets,
and make a soup called "magiritsa",
eaten only on this day of the year.)

easter days

Eggs dyed with onion peels, wine, and home made olive bread,
brought to our house by friends of the heart!

19.3.09

my nieces

On the 1st of March, every girl in Greece wears a bracelet called "march", made of a red and a white thread weaved together, in order not to get sun-tanned and to maintain a princess-white face!
Here you can see an advanced option: the tradition-combined-with-fashion!!

white bond

The bride and the groom are tied by a white bond during the ceremony.
These ones have two friends, a best man and a best woman, standing on their sides.

Sunday noon marriage

This is Metamorfosi tou Sotiros Church, in Chalandri.
Yesterday we were invited to a friend's marriage there, at 13:00.
People (and the groom) were waiting for the bride to come, in a sunny but freezing cold day.
Athens, the capital of Greece, with more than 3.000.000 people....
It's not just ancient ruins and pollution.
Its' also the suburbs, everyday people, gardens, bitter orange trees.
